National Fire Prevention Week special event station N2F will be QRV October 6-12, 2013.

Preferred frequencies will be in the General band segments and will end with "51" in honor of Station 51 of the old "Emergency!" TV show. Example: 3.551, 7.251, etc.

For a QSL, please send a SASE with appropriate US postage, or SAE and 1 greenstamp, to the listed address. Sorry, we don't have a certificate this year, but we think our QSL card is nice.

Links to tips for fire safety in the kitchen:

  • Cooking: Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
  • Microwave oven safety: By following a few simple safety tips, you can prevent painful burns and possible fires.
  • Scald prevention: A scald injury can happen at any age. Hot liquids from bath water, hot coffee and even microwaved soup can cause devastating injuries.

Fire Prevention Week History

Mrs. O'Leary's cow starts the Great Chicago Fire

Some history of Fire Prevention Week hereOne way or another, it started with the Great Chicago Fire of October 9, 1871. The legend is that Mrs. Catherine O'Leary's cow kicked over a kerosene lantern and started the blaze -- but Mrs. O'Leary was haunted by suspicion of arson for the rest of her life.

A Request to Hams in the Fire Business

For next year: We are looking for other hams who are also firefighters or who work in the fire prevention industry to run additional stations N0F, N1F, etc. in 2014. Ideally, we'd like to cover all ten regions and organize a "clean sweep" type event with a certificate. Please send a message to the email address listed above if you would like to run an NFPW station next year.
