I became an SWL (RS95654) in the early 1990's (R208 receiving set, then Trio 9R-59D, then Yaesu FRG-100) and when a local college ran the RAE course I took it (and passed). My interest was HF so because of the morse requirement I stayed an SWL rather than getting my licence, and eventually drifted away from radio because of my day job, and family.
Late 2013 I discovered that the morse requirement was no more and applied for my licence. Ironically I started on VHF with an FT-60 (lack of space) but then bought a second-hand Alinco DX-70TH HF+6m transceiver and now I'm M0OSA/M using the Alinco on low power (10W) with a Outback 2000 multiband HF antenna (or the FT-60 if you speak to me on 2m or above).
Look forward to speaking to you.
