I have been interested in amateur radio since I was about 8 or 9 and listened to shortwave radio on a number of devices. However, the code requirement kept me away as did the level of technical knowledge required. Early in 2009 something sparked my interest again, and I began pursuing the subject on the internet. Finding I could get licensed without learning code, I started studying and took the Technician exam in May, 2009. My Technician license was granted on my 67th birthday.

I started studying for the General and took the test on the second Saturday of July, 2009. I aced it and subsequently received the FCC award. I look at Ham radio as a giant bazar with many booths reflecting the many different areas. Now that I have a license, I can explore those many, fascinating booths and try some of the activities. I continue to enjoy a variety of the many worlds of ham radio. My HF work is 99.9% digital using software defined radios: Flex 3000 and Flex 1500. I have explored Dstar and packet email. I continue to make aquaintance with people in faraway places as well as hams just down the road apiece.

While the official FCC QTH is Phoenix, AZ, I am extremely fortunate to be able to live on the Oregon coast in Newport for half the year. If you have ever been in Phoenix during the summer, you know what part gets spent in Oregon! smiley I also find that antenna experimentation is much easier from the Beachhouse than at the Deserthouse.
