I became interested in Ham Radio as a very young child through my father K4GYK (SK) and was facinated with the things he built and all of the radios that glowed in the dark. He took me to many a Field Day and would let me climb on the roof to "help" with antenna projects. I spent hundreds of hours learning to tune RTTY signals on a Hammurlund HQ170 and watching it print on Teletype models 15 & 28. When he introduced me to Ham Radio and how I could use it with a computer back in the 80's I was hooked and finally got my Technician Ticket KC4URF and began operating on 6/2/440 SSB in EM80 where I was the only operator active on those bands.
After my father passed away my mother who is also a Ham took his call and I changed mine to K3GYK. It's been almost 20 years since I had been inactive until April of 2017 when a friend told me about PSK-31, JT65 ,and some of the other digital modes and how much things had changed.
I can usually be found operating HF using digital modes and some CW and voice on 20 and 40 meters and when the bands are open look for me on 6, 2, and 70cm SSB and digital.
Radios: Yaesu FTDX-3000 for HF and 6-meters and a Yaesu FT-991 for 6/2/70cM SSB and digital modes. An SDRplay RSP 2 rounds out the system and serves as a Pan Adaptor or search receiver.
Antennas: All of my antennas are located in the attic and consist of Par Electronics OA-50, OA-144, and OA-432 Omni-Angles. For gain antennas I have an A144S10 for 2-meters and an A430S15 for 70cM both from Diamond Antennas and aimed SE for general SSB and MSK144 on 2-meters. For 6-meter SSB, MSK144, and other digital modes I have a home brew Moxon in addition to the OA-50 mentioned above. And finally I have a 20 meter dipole for voice and JT65. All antennas are fed with ABR Industries R8x and LMR400 coax. That's 7 antennas in the attic with plans to get a 40 meter wire antenna installed somewhere up there in the attic antenna farm. I occasionally get on 80 meters with an MFJ-993B antenna tuner to load up the rain gutters as a random wire and have worked several stations using this and low power.
I'll also be operating occasionally from our travel trailer in and around Colorado using the FT-991 and some wire antennas or the MFJ Hamtenna whips.
I use eQSL, LoTW and QRZ for my logs and will QSL direct with an old fashion QSL card. If you drop a card in the mail I'll be sure to respond.
73s and gud DX to you
