  I m a retired radio engineer, with an H.N.D qualification, it all started many years ago when I would listen to the short wave bands on our old valve Philips broadcast receiver. I would enjoy listening to the long medium and short wave bands, listening before thinking about getting licensed I believe it's a necessary step, you learn who operates where and with which mode, and eventually, you understand why keeping spurious transmissions down is very important together with good filtering to prevent harmonic radiation. TV and broadcast breakthroughs are becoming a problem of the past due mainly to digital transmission techniques.
