Hello, I'm David - G0SLV. My QTH is a place called Bispham, just north of the Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool. I've been licensed since 1992. I've had no other callsign, as I went straight for what was then the class A license. I got interested in radio as a child in the late 70s, and like many, got a A.M CB radio back in late 1979/early1980 the year before it was legalised. As that was almost the sunspot maximum of that cycle I was fascinated by hearing U.S operators on this cheap, tiny radio installed in my Mother's Honda Civic! SSB came next and the 11 metre DX band, where I started to learn more about radio and propagation. A friend introduced me to amateur radio equipment by recommending a Yaesu FT-747 and then I was hooked. I started self-learning for the R.A.E in 1991 and spent many a long night with my friend Jack (sadly silent key) practicing morse code. I passed the R.A.E and morse test in 1992 and was assigned G0SLV.
I'm a lazy DXer... meaning I'll work it if it's there, but really enjoy good conversations with anyone, anywhere.
I prefer the HF bands, and SSB. I do the odd bit of CW here and there to keep my hand in, but love SSB... and when band conditions allow, I also enjoy tinkering with ESSB. Data modes have never interested me, but I've recently started playing with FT8, which is a refreshingly different way of working, and a useful propagation tool.. For me though, radio is HEARING those faint, fading signals magically coming out of the ether - imagining them travel from the antenna of their origin, going almost into space, then being refracted down again thousands of miles away.
